Deus Ex Machinae

Deus Ex Machinae, derived from Latin meaning "God from the machine",  is when an unsolvable problem is resolved by an unexpected source of technology. Examples of this can be found in some science fiction/fantasy films.

1. The Hobbit- Lord of the Rings: relies on mysticism to save the day. The ring of power is the prime example, especially in the scene where it coincidentally falls onto Frodo's finger.

2. Spongebob Squarepants Movie: In the final scene, the villain's (Plankton) evil doing is undone by the power of rock music.

3. The Adjustment Bureau: the fate of the main characters was changed by they're passionate love, even when at first there seem to be no escape from reality.

Sparking Creativity: Raul Cuero Interview

"Out of difficulties grow miracles"  -Jean De La Bruyere

Raul Cuero's interview, on Living Smart, about creativity was powerful and inspirational. Cuero focuses on the idea and importance of creativity in society and how his creativity was sparked at such a young age. I was captivated by two important concepts: 1) creativity is not based on art or design,  and 2) "Good things take time".

1. CREATIVITY is NOT based on art: Cuero emphasized that creativity doesn't come from art but it is based off the unknown, unexpected: doing something that no one expects from you. Creativity has to do with how you perceive nature in relation to life. It is important that in life we make observations in nature. Everything, every idea, every concept, derives from nature. It is also important to communicate with others through common conversation and interactions because most ideas emerge from discussing other ideas and/or concepts.

2. "Good things take time": Cuero states how most people rush to a solution or looks for the easy fix. It is important to work through the process. In life, everything you do will have a process. It is within the process, where you will find ideas, answers and solutions. Consider it to be a step-by-step advantage.

Juan Carlos Delgado

An example of one of Juan Carlos Delgado's pieces.

This is one of my favorite pieces from Juan Carlos's collection. I could honestly say I have never seen a piece like this: it is very fascinating. Of course when I first saw this piece, I instantly thought it was just a traditional sculpture. As I scrolled through his website, I realize this was a perfect example of multimedia - time controlling tools working in synergy. In simple terms, multimedia is taking a stationary object (in this case) and transforming it from its original state or purpose through time using technology.

First Impression

I was a little overwhelmed with the information and the future projects, we discussed the first day of class. None the less I am really excited about learning the history of art and technology. I've taken a lot of art and design classes since I've been here so this is something different and interesting to experience.

My name is Nasthalia Casimir and I am a junior majoring in Advertising and Public Relations with aspirations of becoming an Interior Designer. I am highly involved on campus and enjoy meeting new people and trying new things. I love to travel and hope that one day I could own an international business.

I expect to learn about the importance of multimedia in society along with the evolution and transformation of technology. I also am looking forward to learning about the various historic art movements that took place throughout time.
